11In today’s conservative, predominantly Catholic Poland, an open homosexual relationship is more likely to trigger gay bashing than gay pride; so it is in Tomasz Wasilewski’s sophomore feature, the feel-bad coming-out drama “Floating Skyscrapers.” Although the lead character is something of a lout as well as an emotional and intellectual cipher, this artfully shot, sexually provocative feature nabbed the Karlovy Vary fest’s East of the West competish kudo and is making the festival rounds.

Buff, macho, bantam-sized, twentysomething Kuba (Mateusz Banasiuk) has been training as an elite swimmer for the past 15 years. He spends most of his time working out and having hot sex with his pretty blonde girlfriend, Sylwia (standout Marta Nieradkiewicz), who lives with him and his attractive, controlling mother, Ewa (Katarzyna Herman, star of Wasilewski’s first film, “In a Bedroom”). The relationship between the two women is tense, exacerbated by Sylwia’s inconsiderate behavior and Ewa’s calls for her son to rub her back while she’s in the bathtub.

7Otherwise, Kuba seems to have few responsibilities or interests, apart from being a dab hand in the kitchen and indulging in wordless sexual encounters with men in bathroom stalls at the gym. When Sylwia drags Kuba to an art opening, he ungraciously decamps to a balcony, where he shares a joint and a long conversation with effeminate-looking college student Michal (Bartosz Gelner). Glimpsing the two men from across the room, Sylwia glowers at the way they seem to be really into each other. She soon has a lot more to scowl about, as Kuba abandons her and their plans every time Michal calls.

A subplot addresses Michal’s relationship with his parents. His mother (Iza Kuna) sympathizes with his sexual preference, yet still encourages him to date girls. His father (Miroslaw Zbrojewicz), however, plays deaf when Michal tries to come out publicly during a family dinner.

78One of the weaknesses of the film is that while Kuba convincingly comes across as a closeted, self-loathing gay man, his sudden declaration of love for Michal at the one-hour mark seems out of character. Indeed, their relationship is shown to revolve around physical desire; we never get to hear their conversations or find out what makes the not particularly likable Kuba tick.

As evidenced by his debut feature, Wasilewski is interested in provocative sexual behavior and has no problem getting his thesps to play intimate, graphic scenes. However, he’s less successful when it comes to creating appealing characters in which the audience can take a rooting interest. Nevertheless, “Skyscrapers” marks a big step up from the low-budget “Bedroom” and showcases the helmer’s flair for composition and intelligent use of sound.

Thesping is strong, with the actresses managing to suggest more about their characters than their male counterparts do with theirs. Eye-catching widescreen production design makes interesting use of water motifs, while sophisticated soundscapes leave some sexual activity to the imagination.

Emanuel travels to visit his grandma Catie, who lives in the countryside. He has a feeling this is going to be their last goodbye. His mother’s looking after Catie and she has decided not to speak a word about grandma’s diagnosis, because she does not want to embitter her. Emanuel does not agree with this decision, but on the other hand, he is also hiding his own sexuality to his grandma. Every little moment shared among them, makes strengthen family ties while mismatched feelings emerge. Emanuel should reconsider if things are really better left unsaid.

A young gay man from Buenos Aires returns to the farm town of his youth to visit his single mother and ailing grandmother. At first he’s eager to make them acknowledge his sexuality, but he comes to realize that, in an underpopulated community where life is determined by age-old farming rituals, it’s more or less irrelevant. Nelson Schmunk wrote, directed, produced, and edited this autobiographical debut feature, which resembles much recent South American art cinema in its understated style and sensitive characterization. The movie may look familiar, but Schmunk’s talent for observational detail gives it a distinctive flavor. The imagery reflects an outsider’s perspective, but also the desire to understand a way of life other than one’s own. In Spanish with subtitles.

In the heart of Montevideo, the affable but secretly troubled Leo wraps himself in the comfort of his small rented room, unmotivated to finish his college thesis or find a job, and content with infrequent visits from his girlfriend. After their six-month relationship ends, Leo begins to break out of his shell by cruising the Internet for a new companion, enlisting the aid of a sympathetic therapist along the way. However, it isn’t until he has a chance reunion with a classmate that he is forced to consider the true meaning of his reclusive lifestyle, and a future outside the metaphoric safety of his room. Featuring an affecting soundtrack and an equally endearing cast of characters, director Enrique Buchichio’s affirming drama is a unique vision of isolation and coming-of-age set against a modern tale of romance and friendship.

About the Director
Enrique Buchichio was born in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1973. In 2005, he was selected for the Talent Campus Buenos Aires competition, organized by the Universidad del Cine in cooperation with the Berlinale Talent Campus. In 2007 he released the short Noche Fría. Leo’s Room is his first feature film.

FROM THE DIRECTOR:
This small film was a personal and experimental piece made with practically zero budget and almost no crew over a few days. I wanted to make this feel like watching a fleeting memory from a young gay man’s past as he recalls his first love. My hope was to make a film with almost no dialogue to see if we can share a quiet experience with these two as if we are watching from a distance, observing this small piece of the world they live in.

Kater is surely one of the most disturbing gay films ever made. If it had focused on a heterosexual couple I am sure this film would have been widely applauded as outstanding, but implicit reactions in most viewers are probably blocked by the sexual explicitness of the two main characters. Personally I find it more disturbing that any of Haneke’s films, and about the extremes of human reaction it certainly is. The violence in it has no explanation because the director does not reveal the hidden impulse that leads to the apparently inexplicable violent act. It is for us the viewer to take on the violence and the guilt that follows and, while watching, bring to the surface our own guilts, our own acts of cruelty, mild or otherwise. The viewer is trapped in his or her own responses, examining their own inner motivations, and that is the darkest place the viewer can be. And because most of us fail to accept our guilt and its consequences we accuse the film of being too long, too boring, too unexplainable; anything will do as long as we refuse to accept that human motivation, even when analyzed by psychiatrists, is haphazard to say the least and that love, although enduring, can be an enduring hell for both persons involved. There is a curious scene where a friend simply watches the two men make love. It is there for apparently no reason and it is curious because he seems to be trying to understand their sexuality as if it were a whole new territory of being, and this is how we should watch this film.

Set in Guatemala, Pablo (Juan Pablo Olyslager) faces a crisis in his life when he reveals to his family that he is gay and will be moving out to be with his male partner Francisco (Mauricio Armas Zebadua).

Pablo’s wife Isa (Diane Bathen) gets the courts to issue a restraining order against him so he cannot see his two children. She eventually will threaten him that unless he enrolls in a gay conversion therapy program in their radical religious church, she will take the children to America.

Overall, I thought this drama was solidly acted with realistic characters, as well as ably written and directed by Guatemalan filmmaker Tayro Bustamante.to separate him permanently from his children, may be the final indignity for a man who deserves not an iota of scorn for a choice not easily made and deeply felt for the grief he has caused his family and friends. It is rare to find such an honest portrayal of the difficulties a decision like his causes for everyone in his life. Without rancor or weeping and screaming from his family, Tremors quietly exposes the blindness of those surrounding him and his own uncertainty that he may have made the wrong decision.

The later scenes of his society’s helping him becoming normal through therapy are the real pain of Tremors because his heart is not in the transformation, but he is willing to sacrifice his own happiness to be with his family.

Nowhere in contemporary cinema will you get as uncompromising a view of the unjust heartache attendant on choosing a societal imperative over one’s happiness.

Olivier (Simon Haycock) takes his boyfriend James (Hugo Bolton) on a romantic break to his house in the South of France. Whilst is France they bump into Caroline (Elly Condron), an old friend of James’ who has been dumped by her boyfriend. The couple agree to let Caroline join them for their vacation but Olivier is less than happy at having a third person around for the duration. As the days go by Olivier and Caroline clash but soon they realise their dislike of each other may actually be covering up something more surprising.

Wasp is the feature-length debut of Swiss writer/director Philippe Audi-Dor. The film features only three actors and takes place in and around a beautiful house in Gordes, Provence. One of the first things you notice is that Wasp is incredibly understated and that’s definitely one of its strengths. Audi-Dor doesn’t feel the need to make his characters veer off onto monologues to move the plot along and often the silences in the film speak volumes about the characters.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gygJJeKYreY     Wasp (2015) 72 min|Drama, Romance|31 May 2015 6.1Rating: 6.1 / 10 from 1225 usersMetascore: 6.1 Olivier and James' romantic break in the South of France is interrupted by the sudden arrival of Caroline. Friendships are questioned; sexuality t

The central plot focuses on the arrival of Caroline into the midst of Olivier and James’ romantic break. Early on in the movie Caroline questions whether either men have been with a woman before and Olivier confesses he has but not since he came out. It’s established early on that the strong-willed Caroline is happy to push whatever buttons she needs to in order to get a reaction and despite an initial dislike between her and Olivier, the two characters start to be drawn to one another.

It’s at this point that the film gets really interesting. We’ve seen countless films exploring closeted characters that are attracted to the same sex but we’ve never seen a film before where a man who identifies as gay begins to question if he is indeed gay or possibly bisexual. The way the story unfolds is really intriguing and we commend Audi-Dor for doing something different and unexpected. The tension that builds between Olivier and Caroline does so expertly and at a believable pace.

We really don’t want to give too much else away about the plot but all we’ll say is that there are plenty of surprising twists and turns as you head to Wasp’s climax. Audi-Dor has assembled a stellar cast for the movie with all of the leads equal to one another in terms of their performance. Simon Haycock does a great job of conveying Olivier’s conflict through his emotive performance and he has superb chemistry with both Hugo Bolton and Elly Condron. Bolton makes what could have been a fairly flighty role rather meaty and Condron has great fun playing the devilishly manipulative Caroline. The trio works really well together and they really excel in the scenes where the tension threatens to boil over.

Audi-Dor, who wrote the movie and directed it, also deserves special comment for what he’s achieved. The film doesn’t feel low budget and the cinematography captures the stunning location really well. It’s not easy to make a film with only three actors compelling and whilst this could work well as a play, Audi-Dor’s direction makes it an intriguing character study and he gets superb performances from his actors.

Wasp isn’t due to be released until Spring 2015 and we think you should be making a note in your diary to see it now. With strong central performances, an interesting and original premise, and stunning direction it’s a film that took us by complete surprise. We’ll be keeping an eye on Audi-Dor to see what he does next and we’ll also be closely watching the careers of Simon Haycock, Hugo Bolton and Elly Condron.

Director Silvio Nacucchi talks about his strange gay parenting tale

Strong acting abounds in “Beyond Love,” a seemingly bizarre Italian drama newly out on DVD. The film tells the story of Anna and Marina, a lesbian couple who want to be moms. Surrogacy is expensive in Italy, far beyond the reach of these middle class women.

Marina confides her frustration to Stefano, her best friend since childhood. Stefano decides to help in a most unusual way: he secretly turns to prostitution in order to raise the funds that Anna and Marina need. He endures abuse from several clients who are into S&M, screaming in anguish while he keeps his eye on the prize. Of course his boyfriend is enraged when he finds out what Stefano has been up to.

One of the most appealing aspects of “Beyond Love” is the friendship between Marina and Stefano. It’s unusual, in film or in life, to see a gay man and a lesbian enjoying such a deep bond. It wasn’t too long ago, after all, that the Gs and the Ls existed as two separate communities with little interest in interacting.

The love and the trust that Anna and Stefano feel for each other runs deep. They confide in each other, often revealing things they wouldn’t share with their spouses. It’s a lovely thing to see.

“Beyond Love” is populated by characters who we would think should know better than to do the foolish things they do. Time and time again, Stefano meets with clients who he knows are going to hurt him. In one particularly disturbing scene he’s raped by a nightstick while tied to a bed–he screams out in pain, yet continues to meet with the unsavory clients who contact him online.

Stefano and Marina also sleep together one night.

Marina’s partner Anna isn’t much better. A fledgling artist, she meets privately with a lecherous straight male art gallery owner whose motives are questionable. Yet she returns for a second meeting.

Some viewers may wonder why the “Beyond Love” characters make such reckless choices. Silvio Nacucchi, the film’s director, addressed this question. The filmmaker spoke to SFGN from his home in Italy.

“The message of “Beyond Love” is that there are no limits to what you are ready to do when you really love someone,” Nacucchi said.

The auteur, who is straight, spoke to many gay men and lesbians as he developed the film’s story and wrote the script.

“I did my best to get to know their mindsets, their attitudes, how they live their lives, and love,” he said. “I took it upon myself to learn more about gay and lesbian relationships, as well as those between gays and lesbians.”

He pointed out that some of the film’s situations were inspired by real life. “Some of the described behaviors might actually seem reckless,” he said. “There are no insurmountable odds when you really love someone. Sometimes people even cancel themselves out and infringe on their own principles.”

The film points to some of the obstacles that LGBT people in Italy face. “In Italy, which claims to be a civil country, LGBT people are not entitled to marry and have children,” said Nacucchi. “They are citizens like all others, hence with feelings, emotional needs, and the desire to have a family.”

Nacuchhi said that many people who’ve seen the film felt a strong emotional involvement with it, regardless of whether they were gay or straight.

“True life stories make a character credible and alive,” he said. “The audience has immediately perceived this, forgetting that the characters are gay or lesbian.”

As our chat drew to a close, Nacucchi expressed his hope for what the impact of “Beyond Love” might be. “The film aims to let the whole world learn about this discrimination we have in Italy,” he said. “I hope that this is all going to end as soon as possible.”

I saw this marvellous film this evening at the Sydney Queer screen Mardi Gras Film Festival. From the first screen shots I was entranced in this not so run of the mill love story. The two male leads are electric in their performances and so convincing as their story unfolds. as is the supporting cast. The cinematography is totally engrossing letting us into a part of the world few tourists ( and Chileans ) get to experience. I would definitely see it again . Highly recommended. And introduced by a very talented and humble young Chilean man

For many reasons, a niceshort film. For predictability. For simplicity reminding that subject so often used. For modesty and correctness. Not great performances, not high story. The real bad detail – the character. The good thing – the song. Sure, a lot of cliches and not comfortable manerism, too much sentimentaly and absurde situation. But, having a precise target, it is absurde to be more severe about it. So, just nice.

Out of the imagination of acclaimed artist-filmmaker Henry Coombes comes Albert, an eccentric, aging painter doubling as an unconventional, Jung-inspired psychotherapist. When Albert’s friend asks him to counsel her lethargic grandson Ben, whose ongoing boyfriend problems are rapidly fueling an already deep depression, their subsequent therapy sessions reveal as much about Albert as they do about the troubled young man. Coombes’ debut feature is a witty, perceptive study of social mores, sexual excess and the bizarre, symbiotic relationship between doctor and patient; teacher and pupil; artist and muse.

No kissing. No passive penetration. For Waseem the rules are very clear: When Lars pays him for sex then only in a way that he can reconcile with his heterosexuality. On the one side the refugee from Syria living in a shelter, on the other side the wealthy German with a loft apartment – the differences couldn’t be more crass and yet both are connected by a sincere interest in each other. Their relationship is rooted in a constant alternation between dominance and longing for closeness. The playful power struggle between the two of them reveals their inability to hide their fears and longings from one another and to keep up their carefully constructed facades. While both struggle to uphold the labels in their head, their friendship starts to pose a real threat within the reality of Waseem’s shelter.

Surreal and Uneven
6 May 2019 | by numberone_1 – imdb
I intend to view this film again and perhaps add or change to this review, as I am of the opinion that Mathews was trying to power-pack several different stories that were all connected. Such connections were sometimes explicit, other times highly implicit, and even on occasion imaginary or inexplicable, possibly all told in real time, possibly juxtaposing past flashbacks with present actions, hence my partial title of “uneven”. The film is also surreal on a number of levels, aided by on-location filming, contrasting scenes of bright sunshine (where actions and events of the characters almost seem unreal) with dark-of-night montages and interiors. Jonny Mars is excellent and conveys complex dimensions of Alex, no easy feat given the character’s largely taciturn manner.

About this film:
Brazilian comedy tale of coming out that has its moments
16 July 2015 | by t-dooley-69-386916 – imdb
Set in Sao Paulo this is the story of a group of gay men / boys. Mauro is as camp as Bloomingdales at Christmas and is friends with Rodrigo, they attend the Gay Parade with Mauro’s uncle (who is also gay) and there they rescue Roger – married with kids and still in the closet. He is attacked by some homophobes and they intervene along with some lesbian activists.

Well after the wake up call they all agree to come out a year later and this is their story.

Now this is fairly lightweight as a gay comedy, the laughs tend to rely on the stereotyped reactions of Mauro and the lies and evasions of not having come out. The acting is all pretty solid. There is even a drag queen playing the mother of one of the characters. Also this is far from a sexathon, this is done for laughs and despite some serious issues coming into play, they are not really expanded upon.
Having said all of the above I did like this; it has not been universally received, but then what ever is. The ending may leave a bit to be desired too but I do not want to reveal the plot. I do like World cinema so was predisposed to watching this, but there are better Brazilian films out there ‘The Way He Looks’ being a case in point but I think this is still worth a punt.
