Landline (2018)

12 min|N/A|24 Mar 2018
Rating: Metascore: N/A
Based around a series of calls the helpline has received since its creation, Loughton’s film uses visual reconstructions to bring these narratives to life on screen. Collecting tales from LGBTQ farmers, over a period of a year, Landline shares the story of a farmer’s discovery of Grindr, a bitter-sweet recollection of a first love and a harrowing tale of an attempted suicide.

Landline is a short documentary about the only helpline in the UK for gay farmers. Through a series of recorded telephone conversations and reconstructive visuals, the film uses the helpline as a lens through which to view the experiences of LGBTQ people in the British farming community. In a world that prizes traditional masculinity and in which ideas of ancestry are fundamental, being gay can be isolating. Suicide rates are extremely high in both young farmers and gay men in particular, and combining these can be a recipe for tragedy. But there are also thriving gay scenes in the most rural of towns, stories of unexpected friendships and relationships, and moments so unlikely that they could only happen in real life. Candid, intimate and shocking, Landline is a snapshot of a group of people bound together by circumstance but so often isolated from each other.

The Curse of Steptoe (2008)

67 min|Biography, Drama|19 Mar 2008
7.8Rating: 7.8 / 10 from 249 usersMetascore: N/A
In the early 1960s aspiring stage actor Harry H. Corbett jumps at the chance to play junk-dealer Harold Steptoe in a television comedy show ‘Steptoe and Son’. However, the show’s success proves to be a poisoned chalice for him, type-casting him and thwarting his stage ambitions. Wilfrid Brambell, the actor playing his father, is marginalized in a different way. He is a gay man in an England where homosexuality is still illegal. The show runs for several years, incorporating film spin-offs but both, in their own way, feel that they have invoked the curse of Steptoe.
The Curse of Steptoe is a television play which was first broadcast on 19 March 2008 on BBC Four as part of a season of dramas about television personalities. It stars Jason Isaacs as Harry H. Corbett and Phil Davis as Wilfrid Brambell. The drama centres on the actors’ on- and off-screen relationship during the making of the BBC sitcom Steptoe and Son, and is based on interviews with colleagues, friends and family of the actors, and the Steptoe writers, Ray Galton and Alan Simpson.

The screenplay was written by Brian Fillis, also responsible for the similarly themed 2006 drama Fear of Fanny, which is about television personality Fanny Cradock off-screen. The 66-minute film is directed by Michael Samuels and produced by Ben Bickerton.

The drama was widely acclaimed and won the Royal Television Society Award 2008 for “Single Drama”.However, the drama generated controversy due to perceived historical inaccuracies, and following complaints to the BBC by Corbett’s family, two revised versions of the drama have been broadcast. Despite these revisions, an investigation by the BBC Trust found that the drama was still unfair and inaccurate. DVDs of the drama have been withdrawn from sale, and there will be no future broadcasts without further editing.

Fifteen-year-old Beni falls in love with Fögi, a singer in a Rock band. As Fögi seduces him, Beni is willing to follow him where ever he takes him. But Fögi is a drug addict and pulls Beni deeper and deeper into his addiction.
Beni, age 15, becomes enamoured with the lead singer of the struggling rock band “The Minks”, Fögi Müller, who is ten years older than him. Fögi ensnares him with the perceived glamor of being a musician, takes him on as the band’s ‘roadie’, and at the same time seduces him. Beni unquestionably follows him, including following him into drug addiction. Beni’s youthful innocence is destroyed in a milieu of sex, drinking, drugs, and rock-and-roll. He ends up prostituting himself to pay for Fögi’s drug habit.
