15 min|Short, Drama|N/A
Rating: Metascore: N/A
When JENNIFER, an undocumented transgender woman, is forced to resort to the sex trade to support herself, her boyfriend, PEDRO, gives her an ultimatum with unintended consequences.

The story of a Latina struggling to thrive at the intersection of her transgender and immigrant identities, this short narrative film debuted at the Los Angeles Film Festival and screened throughout the US. A short film that packs a punch, Afuera follows a day in the life of Jennifer (newcomer Jennifer London), who finds herself caught between her need to be herself and an ultimatum from her boyfriend Pedro (Santiago Malkuth). Afuera features all trans actresses playing the roles of trans women; a rarity in far too many LGBTQ films.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
I made AFUERA to explore the intersection between the immigrant and transgender experiences, and the resilience of this community. As a gay man of color from a working-class, immigrant family, I understand deeply the complexity of identity, and I want to explore these characters in a way that is authentic and universal. My goal is to discover and empower new transgender talent of color, as well as illuminate their specific plight. Caitlyn Jenner, Laverne Cox, and Jill Soloway were instrumental in bringing transgender narratives into the mainstream. However, the stories of undocumented transgender women are virtually invisible. AFUERA helps raise awareness, while at the same time, humanizes the undocumented-trans experience. -Steven Liang

Beefcake (1999)

91 min|Drama|14 Oct 1999
6.8Rating: 6.8 / 10 from 882 usersMetascore: 52
This film looks at the 1950’s muscle men’s magazines and the representative industry that were popular supposedly as health and fitness magazines, but were in reality primarily being purchased by the still underground homosexual community. Chief among the purveyors of this literature was Bob Mizer, who maintained a magazine and developed sexually inexplicit men’s films for over 40 years. Aided by his mother, the two maintained a stable of not so innocent studs. At the end, the film moves into a court room drama as Mizer is tried for running a male-prostitute ring in the early 60’s. Clips of Mizer’s actual films starring individuals, such as Jack LaLanne and Joe Dallesandro, are included.

Beefcake (1999) is a docudrama homage to the muscle magazines of the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s—in particular, Physique Pictorial magazine, published quarterly by Bob Mizer of the Athletic Model Guild. It was inspired by a picture book by F. Valentine Hooven III (published by Taschen) and was directed by Thom Fitzgerald.

The film stars Daniel MacIvor, Carroll Godsman, Jack Griffin Mazieka, Jonathan Torrens, and Joshua Peace in pastiche recreations of life at the Athletic Model Guild, mixed with interviews with models and photographers whose work actually appeared in the early magazines, including Jack LaLanne and Joe Dallesandro. The film was shot in Nova Scotia.

Beefcake was a follow up to The Hanging Garden, also produced by Thom Fitzgerald.

Beefcake premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999 and was released by Strand Releasing in the United States; it was nominated for three Genie Awards.

On a Sunday night, in a large town, an idle quartet, a girl and three boys are mimicking movie titles. They are still at the age when you play to cross the nights. It is an age when people stay together not to come home alone. Through the game, their feelings unveil and reveal incompatible loves. Nothing will ever be the same. Only a dance with a melancholic scent could bring them together one last time. Trying to retain the youth that is running away from them.
